Comedian roasting people’s attempts at cooking Asian dishes

If you are a fan of Asian food and comedy, you might have heard of Uncle Roger, a hilarious character who roasts people’s attempts at cooking Asian dishes. Uncle Roger is the creation of Mr Nigel Ng, a Malaysian stand-up comedian and YouTuber based in London.

Nigel Ng was born in Kuala Lumpur in 1991, the son of Chinese-Malaysian parents. He grew up watching Hong Kong comedy legend Stephen Chow, who inspired him to pursue a comedy career. Later, he moved to the U.S. and made his TV debut in 2018 on Comedy Central’s Stand Up Central. There he performed jokes about his Asian upbringing, his culture shock in the West, and his dating experiences.

Nigel Ng’s breakthrough came in 2020, when he portrayed Uncle Roger. Uncle Roger is a middle-aged Asian uncle with an exaggerated Cantonese accent and a passion for Asian food. Uncle Roger reacts to videos of people cooking Asian dishes, and criticizing them for their deviations from the traditional methods. His first Uncle Roger video, where he reviewed a BBC Food video of Hersha Patel making egg fried rice, went viral and gained over 37 million views on YouTube.

He then collaborated with Patel on a follow-up video, where they cooked egg fried rice together and cleared the misunderstanding. He also reviewed videos of other famous chefs, such as Gordon Ramsay, Jamie Oliver, and Elizabeth Haigh, and praised or mocked their cooking skills. His Uncle Roger videos have attracted millions of fans from all over the world, who enjoy his witty and sarcastic commentary and his relatable and authentic portrayal of Asian culture.
